Night Shift Blues

I work the night shift. That's 7pm to 7am. I've been working this shift for like 6 years. What are some benefits to working the night shift?
  • you usually get a decent shift differential
  • usually the people you work with are not as big a pricks as they are on day shift

...that's about it.

What are the disadvantages?

  • Your pretty much always tired. I could sleep all damn night on my day off and then still be all groggy through the day.
  • Your metabolism is all jacked up. You eat at all hours of the night and usually on your days off you try to convert back to a day shift schedule so you can function with other people somewhat so that means your basically eating at all different times depending on what day it is. Your metabolism gets really messed up as a result.
  • you gain weight. this is a result of the messed up metabolism.
  • your out of the loop when it comes to important info that your company passes. They generally forget you exist. Accept to burden you with menial chores like cleaning the kitchenette or changing trash because the day shift doesn't possibly have time to do it...they are busy doing the real job you were all hired for. And they have more janitorial staff on days. (Hmmm?)
  • It's allot harder to get recognized for doing a great job. Because your boss doesn't really see you much. It's mostly out of sight out of mind. You have to try harder to get noticed. This is a big one at evaluation time. You'll pretty much be middle of the road allot. You wonder why? I'll tell you it's because your boss remembers your name and that's about it.
  • There are all these studies that have been done about cell regeneration in humans taking place after the sun goes down. It's hard wired into us to sleep at night. By working nights and sleeping in the daytime your cells are on like 50% regeneration rate, thus you usually need more sleep to feel revived...do you usually get it? Not with kids you don't

I'm on night shift and I'm burned out with it. I would rather work days for less money and more pricks than slowly destroying my body and mind with this brutal night shift grind.

that's my word

Peace,

-KAM
